Tomas Wester, MD

Dr. Wester graduated from Medical School at Umeå University, Sweden, in 1987. He completed his training in pediatric surgery at the University Children’s Hospital in Uppsala in 1994. Dr. Wester is currently pediatric surgeon at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. In 1996, Dr. Wester was a Senior Research Fellow at the Children’s Research Centre in Dublin with Professor Prem Puri. He defended his doctoral thesis at Uppsala University in 1999. Dr. Wester became Associate Professor of pediatric surgery at Uppsala University in 2006 and at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm in 2009. He is currently Professor of pediatric surgery at Karolinska Institutet. Dr. Wester’s main research interests comprise Hirschsprung disease, anorectal malformations, appendicitis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Dr. Wester was President of the European Paediatric Surgeon’s Association (EUPSA) from 2019 to 2021. He is Deputy Coordinator of the European Reference Network ERNICA and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Surgery at University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.
